The Car 30 team has competed in 17 Rhino Charges since 2005

THE RHINO CHARGE

The Kenya Rhino Charge is an annual off-road motorsport competition that has been held in Kenya since 1989.

It is unique and exciting test that requires bravery and a high level of skill in off-road driving and navigation.

The event, organized by The Rhino Ark Charitable Trust, is held to raise funds for a very noble cause – conservation of Kenya’s mountain Ecosystems. Competitors are required to raise the minimum sponsorship set by the organising committee.

To limit environmental damage, entries to the Charge are limited to 65 vehicles.

HOW IT WORKS

Each team of up to six people has to

  • prepare an off-road vehicle

  • get it to the secret location in Kenya

  • raise minimum pledge of USD10,000 charity sponsorship

  • plot a route using a 1:50 000 map and GPS co-ordinates

  • drive, pull, winch the car in a straight line through the bush, visiting 13 checkpoints across 100 sq kms, hopefully within 10 hours

  • winner is the one who visits the most controls in the shortest distance (GPS measured)

It is harder and slower than you might think and also exciting, dangerous and rather mad.
